Starting the new year off in one of my favorites-- blue chambray. I'm already anticipating that 2012 will be the year of denim for me.

I won't lie, I was happy to bid 2011 goodbye. 2012 is sure to be a year of changes, and I know that I have much to look forward to. I'm both hopeful and excited for all that is to come.

The Vintage Event

I had the privilege of attending and photographing a lovely event on Saturday-- The Vintage Event, held at The Cocktail Club. The event featured merchandise from four different vendors; Candy Shop Vintage, Style Girl Collection, Lori Wyatt Vintage, and Magar Hatworks. Guests mingled and sipped champagne while they browsed through all the beautiful selections, and there was even a prize awarded for best vintage attire. The posh setting of The Cocktail Club made for the perfect backdrop, and the signature "new vintage" cocktail they made for the event was a big hit among the attendees. It was great to see people coming out to support their local vendors and grab up some vintage goodies before the holidays. I also enjoyed meeting more people from the community, and I look forward to future events.

I know, I know... I am like the 9 millionth person to be talking about him at the moment. Between his good looks, the slew of movies he has recently been in, (pretty much all of which are great), his sartorial prowess, and his love affair with his dog, George, it is obvious why everyone is talking about him. But lets focus on his sartorial chops: If you go back and compare old photos of him to those taken more recently, it becomes quite apparent that Ryan Gosling's style has evolved. Nowadays, whether he is walking the red carpet, walking through the airport, or walking the streets with his dog, there is never a moment where Ryan Gosling looks anything less than stylishly cool. With attention to detail, a unique attention to fabric and texture, and a knack for mixing and matching, he manages to create perfectly pulled together looks without erring on the side of boring. Dressed up or dressed down, a blue tuxedo or a pair of Nike dunks-- nothing he wears looks forced. Is it any wonder why everyone is talking about him? Ryan Gosling is definitely the man of the moment, both in film and fashion.

We can only hope that our own style evolutions will transpire into such greatness...

This time a week ago, I had just come off a trip to Washington D.C. to visit one of my very best friends, Wizzie. I had never been to D.C., so I had no idea what to expect going into the trip. I will tell you that I had it in my head that I probably would not like it very much, but I was definitely wrong. D.C. is without a doubt one of the nicest cities I have been to. Its lush scenery, breathtaking sights, staples of history, darling neighborhoods, eclectic nightlife, and limitless shopping make it the ideal place to be. All that said, I had an amazing time, and I hope to go back at some point.

So D.C. itself was great, yes. But naturally, the highlight was hanging out with Wiz. Perhaps my favorite part of the weekend was Saturday night, where we spent our evening hunkered down in her living room doing what we do best... talking, eating, and watching t.v. It felt just like old times.

When you spend as much time sofa surfing and lounging as girls like us do, it is important to create a space that you love and do not mind spending hours in. Wizzie has done just that. I admired Wizzie from day one for her impeccable taste, which her place in D.C. showcases perfectly. It is a hodgepodge of glamour and sentiment... rich and vibrant with color, textured with fabrics, and warm with meaningful artwork, books, photos, and knick-knacks. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Wizzie's place is her attention to detail, which is something only the truly style savvy possess. A perfectly placed tray, stack of books, or some little bauble can make a bigger statement than one often realizes, and it adds that little dose of charm that every place needs to really feel like home.

To Wizzie: So glad I met you, soulmate. Thank you for a fabulous weekend in D.C. And thank you for all the inspiration you bring into my life. You are my constant breath of fresh air.

My scary age birthday was this past week; fortunately, it turned out not so scary. The celebrating is far from over, but so far some of the highlights have been: arriving back at my parents house to find my entire bedroom floor covered in a rainbow sea of balloons, pedicures with my high school bestie, finding a Tiffany's box on the table, waking up early for breakfast and morning mimosas with mom, getting a phone call from my big brother (who is currently far away in Afghanistan), my favorite homemade birthday cake, blowing out all my candles in one powerful foof, and simply being showered with warm wishes and love by the people in my life.

I'm sure there will be more photos to come as the celebrating continues...

The Uniform

I had to wear one briefly in high school, before my school switched over to just a dress code; and I have to say, I always preferred the uniform. There is beauty in the concept of a uniform, and that is simplicity. Simplicity of thought.

Last winter had my mom fumbling for what to wear, and since I am not always around to decide whether or not she is allowed out of the house in what she has on, we devised a fool-proof fashion plan. (Just to be clear, I am not calling my mom a fool.) We went shopping and sculpted a staple outfit that flattered her, was easy, comfortable, and basic. We coined it "her uniform." The contents of which included:

a slightly oversized t-shirt or button-up

leggings

either flat or high-heeled boots

a long piece of outerwear

It was ideal in that it took all the guess-work and hassle out of daily dressing for her, and she would leave the house resting assured that she looked good. She could stock up on slight variations of each item and be good to go for an entire week's worth of dressing.

Above is a variation of my uniform. My go to, hassle free outfit includes the following components:

v-neck t-shirts

any type of androgynous pants

a pair of heels or ballerina flats

one of my many pairs of sunglasses

I do not necessarily think the uniform means you are less stylish or whatever, whatever. In fact, I think the uniform is a crucial aspect of any one's personal wardrobe. Everyone should pinpoint what their uniform is, or devise one if need be, and stock up on those items. A wise dresser knows there will be days when you simply do not have the time-- mornings when you cannot be bothered because there are more important things to be attending to than putting together an outfit for the day. Those instances are why you need a uniform. Do not be deceived by its name. Your uniform can and should be stylish, comfortable, flattering, and fitting of your lifestyle and personal tastes. You can even make a few different versions of it, tweaking the items as needed, pairing them differently as you go along from day to day.

Let's face it, there without a doubt will be mornings when you oversleep and suddenly find yourself having to race out the door in order to get to class, work, or to get your kids to school on time. Please, do not let your fashionable pride get in the way of practicality; and on the flip side, please do not resort to leaving the house in your pajamas. Like I said, a wise dresser knows that there will be those days, so prepare for them. Uniforms can be a wonderfully handy style tool.

I have a slight obsession with Milan Vukmirovic. He is one of the quiet giants of the fashion industry. Unless you are a dedicated style blog reader or deeply enmeshed in the industry yourself, you most likely have never even heard of him. He is a multitalented individual who has had a multifaceted career. Past jobs include being one of the original founders of the famous parisian store, Colette, working under Tom Ford as design director for Gucci, filling the role of creative director at Jil Sander, and doing everything from journalism to photography to styling. Most recently, he was creative director for Trussardi 1911 and editor in chief of L'Officiel Hommes, but has departed from both positions within the past six months. Milan currently has a hand in the Miami store, The Webster, and I am sure it is only a matter of time before he pops up in yet another prestigious role. I admire Milan for his creative diversity and his ability to stay well-rounded. He refuses to be a person who is pegged for doing or being any one thing, but instead embraces this rather modernized notion that success nowadays lies in your ability to do many different types of things.

All this aside, perhaps the reason I am most obsessed with him, and arguably what he is now most well-known for, would be his personal sense of style. You will not find a picture where Milan Vukmirovic looks anything less than exceptional.

He exudes both masculinity and confidence and has style oozing from his pores.

Gentlemen, if there is anyone worth trying to emulate in terms of personal style, it is this man.

Take notes.

I will leave you with some words of Milan's. I like what he points out about the majority of American men:

"I go to L.A. and people tell me, 'I love the way you dress, but I could never do that because everyone will think I'm gay.' American guys worry too much about what others think. Fashion is fun, and you should be able to play with your look."

I have a big birthday coming up towards the end of September. One of those monumental ones. A mile marker. I'm normally the most birthday obsessed individual on the planet, but not this year. I'm actually sort of dreading it. I've been calling it my scary age. You know, that age where your realities suddenly become real. (I promise, I'm not normally this dramatic about things.) With that said, there will still be some icing on my scary age birthday cake. Of course, celebrating with family and friends will be special. And on top of that, I hopefully will be flying to D.C. to visit my best friend. I'm also thinking that when it's all said and done, I might just have to scrape together my birthday pennies and loose change to treat myself to a little something sweet... and I don't mean cake.

There's just something about her.

I'm not one to follow model fashion. I simply can't relate to it. And by that I mean, I'm not 5'11 and 115 lbs. The confines of dressing that exist for every other body type simply don't apply to women who are that tall and that thin.

But Miranda Kerr is my exception.

Her style just really appeals to me.

She's minimalistic without being boring and stylish without being over-accessorized. She walks the line between the two quite beautifully, maintaining just the right balance, which is not as easy to achieve as we'd all like to believe.

She usually sticks to neutral colors, (a lot of black), but finds ways to still make her outfits interesting... accentuating with an extra wide belt, accenting with a bold lipstick, wearing red heels with a dark ensemble, adding texture with a studded bag, or throwing on a tailored blazer or printed scarf.

There's also a sense of normalcy in the way she dresses. By this I mean, she might be carrying a designer bag, but she's also wearing a pair of flip-flops.

Like I said, there's just something about her...

High heel lovers everywhere are going to gasp when I say this, but I'm preferring a lower heel these days. Don't get me wrong, I still love my crazy 5-inchers with towering 2 inch platforms, but they aren't conducive for walking city streets or navigating over the uneven pavement and cobblestone. These heels from Zara are easily the most wearable pair I've ever owned. With a modest 3 inch heel, I find them both incredibly manageable and easy to walk in. Again, I haven't completely disowned all of my ankle breakers, but these have taken top spot for the time being.

Clothing and Memories

H&M shirt and dress

I am always amazed at how many things are tied to memories. Certain sights, sounds, smells, activities, places, people... and even clothing. I can remember the outfit I have worn for almost every memorable or even semi-memorable happening in my life, which applies to this dress. I have worn it so many times that I have lost count, but the one time that sticks out is when I wore it for the open house at my current school. I remember walking through the doors in this dress and instantly feeling at home. Walking into the building, even without having met anyone or having taken a tour, I knew it would be where I would graduate from. I also distinctly remember getting a couple compliments on the dress that day, and I can even remember from whom those compliments came. Funny, the little details that are forever etched in your memory.

I found out this past week that I will officially be done with college in just ten short months. And while I will admit that I have never really enjoyed school, I am extremely grateful for the education that I have received over the years. I have received some of the best education money can buy, all thanks to my parents' sacrifice. I have spent the past seventeen years being challenged and stretched, and not just in an academic sense. I have had the privilege of meeting amazing people, making some incredible connections, and forming some wonderful friendships through all my different types of schooling... And soon it will be over. I am definitely ready for it to be, but I am also determined to pay attention to and absorb all the little details that will fill these next ten months. I have also already decided that, on my last day of school, I will wear this dress.

At this point, the Alexander McQueen name has pretty much become synonymous with skull embellishments. You name it, they will put a skull on it. I noticed that they even blinged out a pair of riding boots with skulls for fall. I for one do not have any problem with this. I am starting to view skull embellished fashion as the epitome of cool and tough.

Just A Dress

Raid the closet of any southern girl and you will find a plethora of little sundresses. Between the incredibly intense sun and humidity so thick you can cut it with a knife, do you really blame us for taking the simple and easy way out?

My suggestion for making such plainness of dress slightly less boring would be to find dresses with sweet, summery prints and then pair them with a fun pair of heels. Heels have a way of taking a simple little dress to a different level than it would have been at if paired with flats.

MAC lipsticks in Naturally Eccentric & Tanarama

I love a nude lip. I used to just use concealer in order to achieve this look, but it had a tendency to dry my lips out. Now, I use MAC's Naturally Eccentric during the day when I want a pale pout. It gives the same appearance as a concealer but without the drying. If I go out at night or just feel like adding a little more pizzazz to my lips, I will use MAC's Tanarama, which has a frost finish. The gold shimmer really puts a different spin on a neutral lip.

A bowl of cherries and an afternoon nap. I took my cue from Coco on that last part, but the difference between us is that I prefer to sleep in my bed. Why Coco chose to sleep on the floor and rest her head on my sketchbooks, I do not know. Sketchbooks as pillows do not look comfortable.

Hat Hair

J.Crew Panama Hat and H&M Dress

My mom got her hair done yesterday by my friend and our stylist, Shea. My mom said Shea pointed out how I'm always wearing my hair up, even though she put pretty highlights in last month. I suddenly became somewhat ashamed of my bad hair ways and began to wonder if it really is that noticeable that the last couple months have lent themselves only to ponytails. Truth be told, back in May, before I started having Shea do my hair, I received a total hack job from some hair stylist who should have known what he was doing... but didn't. He also managed to strip the pigment from my hair. Lots of money and a few tears later, the color was mostly corrected, but the cut is just something that will have to grow out. Trust me, it's bad... Like a cross between a mushroom and a mullet... I have a mushroom mullet. Fortunately, I now have the very talented Shea doing my hair, so I won't have to worry about disasters like that any more. But in the meantime, I'm sporting ponytails constantly and hiding my hair underneath this hat. The J.Crew Panama hat, a.k.a. my new best friend. It has saved me not only from the sun during these hot months, but has also been the best disguise for hiding my hair.

So thank you J.Crew for putting out your Panama hats this summer. I don't know what my awful mushroom mullet head would have done without you.

My incredibly generous and thoughtful sister-in-law sent it to me about a week and a half ago, but I am just now getting the chance to post the pictures of it... so here it is... in all its naked glory. With twelve shades of shadow ranging from "virgin" to "gunmetal", it is every makeup minimalist's ideal product. If you tend to prefer neutral eye shadow shades, then I would highly recommend you get your hands on one. Added perks would be the velvety exterior, which gives the contents of your makeup bag a lux feel. Also, not having to fish out your little eye shadow singles from the bottom of your bag saves you from petty annoyance while getting ready.

Life Is Short But The Summer Is Long

Just a string of summertime photos. Some from this past weekend with my mom and some from the weeks passed. Think colorful nail polish, time with family and friends, long afternoons hiding out in my grown up tree house with the dogs, good music, captivating books, lots of ice cream, rich and colorful scenery, a new found interest in makeup, the scorching southern sun, hiding behind sunglasses and hats, breathable fabrics, palmettos swaying in the breeze, and of course, a little nostalgia. The last photo especially evokes such feelings... My adorable little neighbor girl, whom I've had the privilege of babysitting since she was born, playing in my parents' pool. It reminds me of my youth, where between two-a-day swim practices and spending any free time I had in the pool, I practically sprouted gills and became a fish. Life was nothing but a good tan and days spent with my friends.

She Came Along With The Sunbeam

My parents will soon be hosting two girls for a year, one from China and one from South Korea. They will be coming to America to study and better learn the English language. I am so excited about this. I always wanted sisters. Although, I will admit, it will be an adjustment. Even though I have an older brother, for the last four years of my life, I have somewhat felt like an only child. Chris is married, lives in North Carolina, and is in the army, which has caused him to spend the last couple years of his life overseas. Due to these realities, I have certainly been the primary recipient of my parents time, energy, and attention. I do not mind sharing them, though. Not one bit. Even still, I felt it would be nice to have a "last hoorah" with my mama. She came into town for a weekend of real quality girl time... We went to the movies and saw Midnight in Paris, which I thought was an incredibly charming film and an absolute visual delight. We also ate Thai food at my favorite restaurant, indulged in some sweets, walked around the city, took pictures, lounged around my house and talked, and did a little minor shopping. All in all, it was a fabulous weekend with one of my favorite people.I have so many photos to share from our time together, so I will post some of those this week.

I will live on islands. Somehow, someway, someday. I don't know if its the palette of soft blues, sea foam greens, and lots and lots of white that draws me in, or if its the romanticized notion of mine that life on an island is like being on an endless vacation. All I know is that sand everywhere and a nice sea breeze have never bothered me. My mom always said I was part fish, so I guess it makes sense. Being in or near the water is definitely my idea of home.

As time goes on, and as I get older, I notice myself getting further and further away from lots of color. Don't get me wrong, I still like a good dose of color in an outfit, and I feel you usually need a bit to keep it from being boring, but I'm more of a neutrals girl these days. Now when I shop, I find myself gravitating more towards the blacks, the creams, the tans, the grays, the whites... You get the point. Once again, this isn't to say I don't ever wear colorful outfits, (Uh, hello Lanvin blazer!) But nowadays, I usually dress in a more neutral palette and then do little bursts or pops of color, as opposed to all over... This outfit is a perfect example: Black and tan with a big pop of red. It does a nice job of breaking up the monotony.

Take this oversized tee and genie legged jumpsuit, for example... The combination really makes you do a double take to see if some crazy girl went out in her PJs... Nope. That's just Meg in her typical, comfy, cop out attire.

Meet Shea, my new hair stylist/beauty expert.

I have known Shea since grade school, and we spent the better part of our senior year attached at the hip. Shea was that girl who never had a bad hair day and always had flawlessly applied make-up. Although, I have to say, it was her feisty spirit and quick wit that first captured my attention and has caused me to be so endeared to her throughout all these years. In high school, everyone told her she needed to be a hair stylist, and by the time December rolls around, she will be. However, it seems that the very people who were so quick to claim hair styling as her talent have not been so trusting... I am not one of those people. I am proud to say I was Shea's first client from high school, and my hair is proof that she has indeed answered the correct career calling on her life. The girl is a hair color genius! She also makes sitting in the chair for three hours incredibly fun...

It can be an odd thing- seeing people from the past. Shea and I were once a couple of private school teenagers with chips on our shoulders. Now, I look at Shea and see someone who is incredibly settled and pursuing her dreams. She has a full life, a wonderful family, and has found love. I feel privileged to have grown up with her... to see her as an adult and witness what an amazing person she has become. Furthermore, after spending an afternoon with Shea, I am reminded that even our best laid plans are often times no match for what is actually up ahead. Countless conversations took place in the months leading up to our graduation concerning what would be next for us, and I laugh when I think about how nothing has gone "according to plan." Our lives are so different than we thought they would be. And while these past four years have not been without their share of trials, I am overcome with joy when I count the blessings that have not only been poured into my life, but also into the life of my spunky and beautiful friend, Shea.

I suppose, the only thing we can for sure plan on in life is being surprised.

To Shea: Thank you for my awesome new hair color, a wonderful afternoon, and for being feisty, witty, beautiful you. Your fighting spirit is inspiring, your humor is captivating, your beauty is overwhelming, and your friendship is cherished ♥

Only two more days until my friends and I can check off yet another quarter of college. In the meantime, I've taken to the sweltering streets with damp hair, a granny shawl, and a disposable camera. I'm not sure if it's the frustrations of higher education or if the heat is beginning to melt our brains, but delirium consumes and everything seems unusually funny or extra annoying. The light at the end of the tunnel is a two week break, which I intend to spend primarily poolside.

A cancelled evening class left me with a little unexpected extra time on my hands. In this extra time, I stumbled upon photographer, Damian Russell. He takes some of the most delicious photos. They are candy for the eye, courtesy of the incredible way he captures both color and texture. Thanks to him, I now want a piece of toast with a cute, little honey heart drizzled on it and an entire wall covered top to bottom in random photographs.

As soon as the weather heats up, my favorite fabric/textile to clothe myself in is linen. It's light weight, arid, and has a casual vibe to the material's composition. It's perfect to dress down an outfit or give it that "beach look" that I love so much. I have a couple pairs of linen pants, a linen dress hanging in my closet, and this linen button-up that I found at a thrift store awhile back... All of which are summertime favorites.

Oversized and oh so comfy. I've been having fun with coral lips lately, which I've found to be a nice alternative to red in these warmer summer-esq months. Although, finding the right shade is tricky... Not so sure I've found it yet. I'm also in need of a good hair chop. Yes, looking very forward to doing that.... That's about it... I've hit a brick wall with some things, but I'm feeling very positive, as if this is actually the point where things begin... Good things, I might add... Good, better, and then best.

Props to Rachel Roy for getting creative with her spring 2011 collection film. I love that more and more designers and brands are doing these types of short movies to showcase each new season's collection. Not only is it great marketing, but I also think it helps give the consumer better insight into the designer's/brand's inspiration, influences, and overall aesthetic for that particular season. I think it is an opportunity for them to get creative, build a concept, and have some fun... And I have to say, there are very few of these types of short films that I see and do not like... This one in-particular, from RACHEL Rachel Roy, is just spectacular.

I know... It's kind of bright. I don't normally wear such blinding colors, but the perfect fit and ethnic vibe of the blazer drew me to it. I scored this bold gem in a consignment shop that keeps the best stash of vintage hidden in the back room of their store. I'd say it's my favorite secret place to shop the old and used, especially when looking for designer vintage.

In other news:

School is driving me nuts. Have I graduated yet? One year left. That's it. Just one year and then no more nonsense.
I'm making my return to swimming this Friday after a three year hiatus from the pool... I have a feeling I'll be regretting that decision after about.. ohhh.. 5 laps.
Lastly, my dog has pink eye. Weird, huh? Administering eye drops to a dog... Not so easy. A mother's work is never done.

Perspective. Having the right one is no easy feat, which is probably why I have to be reminded of it far more often than I care to admit. My mom, with all her many words of wisdom, has brought it to mind a few times within the past week. And oddly enough, I was also encouraged to find that right perspective by these photos... I have found over time, and by learning some tough lessons, that the best things in life do not usually come in a perfectly wrapped box with a big bow around them. In fact, it is usually the opposite. They seem to rise up out of the muck. These photos are from a recent dessert outing in Atlanta that was meant to serve as a little belated birthday celebration for my beautiful friend, Heather. I was reminded while looking at these photos that my blossoming friendship with Heather is one that has arisen out of some muck. She is, to me, living proof that after every sour bite of life, there is usually a sweet treat waiting for you...

I hope that if you are reading this, and you are in the midst of a sour bite of life, that you will find such sweetness on the other side of it all...

I was back home in Atlanta last week for what was too short of a break in between winter and spring quarters for school. We had been having such nice weather here that I figured it would be the same in Atlanta. Wrong! I packed all things spring, only to get home and find the temperatures to be ridiculously chilly for this time of year. If I recall correctly, it was in the 50's. Want to laugh? I even brought home a bathing suit... Clearly wishful thinking on my part... Pretty much the warmest things I packed were the obnoxiously purple blazer and high-waisted flare leg jeans seen above. Wearing the jeans with my favorite and most comfortable pair of platforms (which as you can tell by the picture have certainly seen better days...) screamed that's so 70's. But thanks to my oversized, royally obnoxious, purple blazer, I also got in a bit of crazy 80's... Note to self: always check the weather before traveling anywhere...

I attended CFW two nights ago. By far, the highlight of the night was Lindsey Carter's label, Troubadour. The show was quite good, and everything she sent down the runway was incredibly adorable! I would easily wear every piece from the show... Currently coveting the Troubadour FEED 10 Bag for sale in her online store. Must find a way to get my hands on one! Not to mention, the money goes towards a good cause...
